River Guide Jeff 03-21-2012 7:44:05 PM CST Pymatuning Report -- March 17 Made my first "scouting" trip to Pymatuning. Spend a few hours trolling the deep basins with leadcore line, a tactic that has been effective on pre-spawn Pymatuning walleyes in the past. Not today, though. A good friend fished shallow and mid-depths with no success, so I checked out an area for yellow perch, one that produced well last December. The perch were still there. We caught a half-dozen nice perch, but the bite was sporadic. Bright, sunny skies, with very light wind. Walleyes should move shallow within the week.
River Guide Jeff 03-16-2012 7:34:55 PM CST River Report -- March 16 First guide trip of the year targeting river smallies. We boated 35 bass, four northern pike and a 23 inch walleye. Most of the bass in the 14 to 16 inch range, with a few 16 to 18 inches. Galida Grubz, rabbit fur jigs, and XCalibur jerkbaits accounted for the fish. With warm weather predicted for at least another week, this "super-early" bass bite should continue for at least a few days. Call or email if you'd like to strike while the iron's hot.
River Guide Jeff 03-16-2012 7:28:30 PM CST Winter Walleye Update -- Thanks to the mild weather I got in more winter walleye (and sauger) fishing than I have in several years. Fished the middle Allegheny, lower Allegheny and Ohio. Also, did some six-hour guide trips on the Allegheny. All-in-all, pretty good fishing, with some days providing high numbers of average sized fish, and some with fewer, but bigger fish. Leadhead jigs with Gulp minnows, and blade baits were the ticket.
River Guide Jeff 03-16-2012 7:05:18 PM CST 2012 Fall Fishing, Pymatuning Perch -- Fall of 2012 provided some unexpected sport for yellow perch on Pymatuning Lake. I did several trips during Dec; caught loads of yellow perch, most of them in the nine to 11 inch range. Blade baits, jigging spoons along rocky humps in 18 to 22 fow.
River Guide Jeff 11-13-2011 7:43:47 PM CST River Report -- Nov. 13 A little slower on the river today. Lots of wind...limited areas that could be fished. We caught 32 smallies and three walleyes. Biggest walleye 22 inches. Biggest bass 17 inches. Floating leaves an issue in some areas. Galida's Grubz, Winco Chillee Willie, rabbit fur jigs. Water temp 45 degrees. Fairly clear. Water level dropping.

River Guide Jeff 11-10-2011 7:58:18 PM CST River Report -- Nov. 10 Mark Transue (Transue's Tackle) and I fished river this afternoon, boating 27 smallies and one (sublegal) walleye. Biggest bass were 17 inches. Most of them on rabbit fur jigs. A few on Senkos and swimming jigs, too. Water temp back up to 49. Water starting to get quite clear (for fall). Floating leaves a problem in some areas.
River Guide Jeff 11-07-2011 6:25:41 PM CST River Report -- Nov 7 Today was a reminder of how good fall fishing on the Allegheny can be when conditions are right. Client and I boated 58 smallies and three walleyes. Lost a few bass as well. A bunch of fat bass in the 16 to 18 inch range. Most of the rest around 14 inches, with a dozen or so a bit smaller. Water temperature 45 to 47 degrees. All of the fish taken on Winco Undulators and rabbit fur leadhead jigs.
River Guide Jeff 11-07-2011 6:21:14 PM CST River Report -- Nov 6 Back on the river following a road trip to Michigan (ruffed grouse hunt), and a short hiatus to catch up on overdue writing assignments. We boated 40 smallies (including two 19 inchers) and four walleyes (biggest 21 inches). Only two bass under 12 inches. The majority were 13 to 16 inches and fat as footballs. All of the fish on Winco Undulators, Winco Chille Willies, and Galida Grubz.
River Guide Jeff 10-23-2011 1:57:03 PM CST River Report -- Oct 23 We did a half-day am trip today. Cold air temp (35 degrees) and very foggy start. Fish were lethargic first couple of hours. Boated a few, and missed/lost several. Action picked up as the fog burned off. We ended up boating 14 smallies up to 17 inches in four hours. Speed Craw, Jimmy D Riverbug (bucktail) and Winco Undulator were the productive baits. Water temp 52 degrees.
River Guide Jefff 10-22-2011 6:03:35 PM CST River Report -- Oct 22 Good day today, especially during the morning. We boated 22 smallies, one walleye and one northern by lunchtime. Things slowed during the afternoon, picking up nine more bass. Biggest bass 18 inches. Two 17 inchers. Most of the others 13 to 16 inches. Zoom Speed Craws, Strike King Bitsy Jigs, and Undulators were the productive baits. Water temp 53 degrees.
River Guide Jeff 10-22-2011 5:59:39 PM CST River Report -- Oct 21 A decent bite during an am half-day trip. We boated 11 smallies and two walleyes. Biggest bass around 15 inches. All on Zoom Speed Craws. Water up a couple of feet from last week. Bass in their typical fall locations. Water temp 55 degrees.
River Guide Jeff 10-16-2011 5:29:52 PM CST River Report -- Oct 17. Very finicky bass during a half day am trip. We only managed to get five in the boat. Lost at least that many fish. Biggest boated fish 15 inches. Several of the "lost" fish were quality ones. Water color stained; 56 degrees. River came up a foot in 24 hours due to rain up north, perhaps being the reason for the light biters.
River Guide Jeff 10-15-2011 5:44:53 PM CST River Report -- Oct. 15 Today was a tale of good, bad and ugly. The weather was the ugly part, with rain early, the wailing winds. But the fishing was both good and bad. Early and late in the session we boated 29 smallies and one walleye. During the bad period -- the middle of the day -- we only caught one. Ended up with 30 smallies and one walleye boated, plus we lost a few. Biggest bass: 19 inches. Smallies are starting to move into their typical fall spots. Water temp 58-59 degrees. Slightly stained. Zoom Speed Craws and Yum Craw Papis.
River Guide Jeff 10-15-2011 5:41:01 PM CST River Report -- Oct. 14 We boated nearly 20 smallies and one walleye today on a rainy, windy day. The best action was in the am. Some floating weeds and a fair amount of leaves. Water temp 61 degrees; water clear (but starting to take on color from the rain). Most of the fish on Zoom Speed Craw and Undulator (a soft plastic from eastern Pa).
River Guide Jeff 10-11-2011 6:19:10 PM CST Special Fishing Report -- Today I had the pleasure of fishing for monster flathead cats on the lower Susquehanna River with a couple top-notch guides (Rod Bates and Dave Neuman) from Koinonia Guide Service. These guys have Susquehanna River flatheads wired. In a three hour span -- starting at first light -- we caught 18 flatheads. Two of them were over 35 pounds, and another was over 27. A lot of fish in the eight to 12 pound range. Provided river conditions stay decent, these fish will continue to bite for at least another month. If you are interested in a fast-paced trip with the potential of providing you with the heaviest fish you've ever caught, give Rod a call at 717-805-7082.
River Guide Jeff 10-09-2011 5:48:50 PM CST River Report -- Oct. 7 We had to work for fish, but were rewarded with around 20 smallmouth and five walleyes. Five good smallies between 16 and 18.5 inches. X-Raps mostly, but a few on Zoom Speed Craws and Senkos. Water temp 60 degrees. Floating weeds present, but not too much of a problem.
River Guide Jeff 10-05-2011 6:52:07 PM CST Fishing Update, Oct.5: Trips scheduled for the past weekend were cancelled due to the cold, dismal, windy weather. Today Mark Transue and I fished Pymatuning Lake for smallmouth bass. Thing started off well, taking three fish up to 18 inches from the first spot. The action slowed, and we switched to Conneaut Lake. Slow fishing: we boated a couple largemouth bass and northern. Water temp. 58 on Pymy; 62 on Conneaut.
River Guide Jeff 09-25-2011 4:51:38 PM CST River Report -- Sept. 25 Another decent day on the river. 20-some smallies, with a half dozen in the 16 to 18 inch range. Two walleyes and one northern. X-Raps mostly. A few on Yum Dingers and Zoom Speed Craws. Water 67 degrees, a bit of color. Quite a few floating weeds.
River Guide Jeff 09-22-2011 10:44:30 AM CST River Report -- Sept. 21 Back on the river after a period of muddy water and travel. Decent day today. 20 smallies and 2 walleyes. Six smallies between 15 and 18 inches. 18-incher the fattest I've seen from the river in a while. Yum Dingers and X-Raps. Water temp 65 degrees. Fairly clear. Some floating weeds, but not terrible in most areas.
River Guide Jeff 09-11-2011 5:47:59 PM CST Fishing Report -- Sept 11 Heavy rain in the middle Allegheny River valley on Friday night turned the river to mud in the Emlenton/Parker area. Lots of gobs of floating weeds, too. We moved Sat and Sunday's trips to Kahle Lake. Caught 33 lmb up to 16 inches on Sat (full day) and 20-some up to 20 inches on Sunday(half day, am). Drop-shot rigged Senkos, and Texas-rigged Netbait worms accounted for most of the fish.
River Guide Jeff 09-09-2011 6:38:34 PM CST Pymatuning Bass -- My buddy Dave Lehman and I fished Pymatuning today, targeting bass. We caught smallies up to 19 inches, and largemouth up to 3.25 pounds. The largemouth came off of shorline wood; the smallies from shallow, gravel flats. Pymatuning supports a fine bass fishery, one that sees little angler attention outside of the spring season.
JCK 09-08-2011 7:16:07 PM CST Nice photos on this board. Must have some good fishing going on in Western PA.
River Guide Jeff 09-05-2011 2:59:29 PM CST River Report -- Sept. 2 Things were slow during a half day pm trip this afternoon. Between the clients and I we boated (or lost at the boat) around 10 smallies. Four nice ones in the 16 to 18 inch range. X-Raps and Zoom Speed Craws. Water temp back up near 80. The coming rain and cooler temps should help pick things up.
River Guide Jeff 08-28-2011 6:24:20 PM CST River Report -- August 28 A father and daughter team joined me this morning for a half-day morning trip. Breezy but fishable conditions. We boated around 14 smallies up to 16 inches. Mostly on X-Raps, two on Zoom Speed Craws. Biggest bass around 16 inches. Water temperature is still in the mid 70s... river low and clear.
River Guide Jeff 08-25-2011 7:11:21 PM CST River Update -- August 25. Mark Transue and I fished Pool 6 (Kittanning Pool) the last three hours of daylight last night. We boated a couple dozen smallies up to 16 inches. Most of them in the 10-12 range but a few nice ones. XRaps, Senkos and drop shot-rigged mini flukes. Today Dave Lehman and I fished the Parker area. We caught several quality fish up to 18 inches in the am on Zoom Speed Craws and Yum Craw Papi. Then the front blew through, the skies cleared, the fish shut down.
