River Report -- April 30 A good day. The numbers down a bit, but lots of big fish. We boated 20 smalmouth bass, most of them from 2.5 pounds to near 4 pounds. Bass are starting to mil around spawning flats. The prespawn bite is on! Water temperature 52- 54 degrees. Water clear to slight stain. Most of the big ones today on Winco's River Darter.

River Report -- April 28 A windy, rainy half day on the Allegheny. My guests worked hard despite the tough conditions. The numbers were down, but we put a few quality-sized smallies in the boat. All on jerkbaits. Fish are starting to show up near spawning flats. Water temp 53-54.

River Report -- April 26 Another good day on the river. We boated 30 smallies and one walleye during a six-hour afternoon trip; lost another 10 or so. Jerkbaits, crankbaits, and Booyah Baby Boo jigs with crawfish trailers. Water temp 52 degrees. I expect smallmouth bass to be moving into spawning locations within the next week or two, depending on the weather.

River Report -- April 23 Finally back on the river after a period of high water. A good day. Things started slow, but we caught a few on tube jigs and Galida's Grubz. But afternoon -- after the sun had warmed the water -- we began catching them on jerkbaits over rocky flats. We ended up with another 15 to 20 big smallies on jerkbaits, including a double by the clients shown in photo. Water temp 48 to 50 degrees. Biggest bass was 19.5 inches.

River Report -- April 7 We finally have good conditions for river smallies. Today we boated/near-boated over 30 smallmouth bass. With the exception of a couple 13 inchers, all of the fish were in the 15 to 19 inch range. Taken on tube jigs and jerkbaits (Rapala Husky Jerks and Yo-Zuri Sashimi Jerkbaits). Water temp 46 degrees and clear.

River Report -- Dec. 16 We're still scratching out a few smallmouth. We boated eight smallmouth, all between 16 and 18 inches. Also three walleyes, two 18 inchers, and one sublegal. Water temperature 38 to 39 degrees. Most of the fish on tubes.

River Report -- Dec. 9 Recent rain had the river highly discolored, but elevated it to a normal level for this time of year. We didn't get many fish today -- two smallies and a three walleyes. But the outing did produce one of the year's best bass, a 20 inch smallie that went 4.3 pounds. Water temp 41 degrees. Everything on tubes.

Late Fall Fishing Update -- Dec. 1 November was a busy month, greatly dominated by grouse hunting. Still, we squeezed in quite a few guide trips on the Allegheny, along with a Pymatuning trip. The Allegheny has been productive, with quality-sized smallmouth bass showing up in fair numbers, along with some nice walleyes. On a guide trip for muskies on Nov. 29 the client had a 40-inch-class fish near the boat, only to see it shake the bait loose before it was in net range. On Dec. 1 we boated 14 smb and one walleye. No monster bass, but all were between 14 and 18 inches. Our Pymatuning trip only produced sub-legal walleyes and average-sized yellow perch (not the jumbos we found last fall/winter). River fishing should continue to be worthwhile as long as the river remains in good condition. I will book guide trips though (like last winter) will reduce the hours (and rate) of a day trip to six hours/$250. This will allow for fishing during the warmest part of the day.

River Report -- Oct. 29 Back on the water after a couple weeks dedicated to grouse/woodcock hunting in NW PA and Michigan. Decent action. My clients worked hard during a cold, damp morning half-day trip. We boated/near boated a dozen. No bigguns, but all between 12 and 16 inches. Winco's Undulator and Canyon tubes.

River Report -- Oct 6 A slower day today, perhaps caused by a significant cold front. We boated 20 to 25 smb. Two quality-sized smallies in the 16 to 17 inch range. Winco River Darters, Winco Undulators, Rapala X-Raps and tubes. Water temp 61 degrees. River still low and clear. Weeds are problem is some areas, not bad in others.

River Report -- Oct 4 A solid day today. After a slow start -- no action at all the first 1.5 hour -- things picked up. We boated 35 smb, and lost at least 10 others. Several over three pounds, with one just an ounce shy of four pounds. Mostly on X-Raps, with a few others on Winco River Darter and Winco Wacky Worms. Water temp 64 degrees. Low and clear. Floating weeds not too bad today.

River Report -- Sept. 29 Numbers-wise, the action was average, with around 14 boated/near boated during a half-day morning trip. But we caught a nice bunch of quality fish in the 15 to 18 inch range. Most of them came on Winco's River Darter. Also a couple on X-Raps and Winco's Predator Craw.

River Report -- Sept. 22 A relatively slow half-day trip. We ended up boating 12 or 13 smb, but the first couple of hours were slow, with only a hand full of small to medium-sized bass taken. Things picked up around mid-morning, including three in the 16 to 18 inch class. Most of them on X-Raps. Floating weeds are a real nuisance. Water temp 65. River still low and fairly clear.

River Report -- Sept. 17 A good day on the Allegheny. We boated/near boated over 40 smallies. At least eight of them in excess of 15 inches, including two 19 inchers. Also had two "doubles," i.e. two smallies on the same lure/same cast. One of the doubles was a made up of 15 and 17 inch fish. Both of the doubles on XRaps. Also caught quite a few fish on Winco's River Darter. Water temp 65-68 degrees, low and clear.
