River Report -- July 5 Today was day two of my Texas friend's river smallie trip. We boated 51 today. Today's catch again provided a wide range of sizes. Lots of little and medium-sized fish, though we managed at least a half-dozen in the 15 to 18 inch range. X-Raps and Winco River Darters. Water temp 80 degrees, with a slight stain.

River Report -- July 2 Wes W. of Texas (originally from Pgh area) continues his tradition of visiting western PA the week of July 4. As has been his past practice he fishes with me three days of that week. Today, on day 1, we caught 42 smallies. A typical summertime mix from dinks on up to 17 inches, with all sizes in between. Water had just a tad of color to it, and was 82 degrees when we left at 2:30 pm. All on hard jerkbaits.

River Report -- June 28 Hot, sunny day on the water. But fairly productive, given the weather conditions and the low, clear water. We hooked around 40, but lost more than normal today. The fish were biting on the tentative side, most only hooked on the back treble. Most days they t-bone jerkbaits from the side, getting pinned by the front hook. Biggest in the boat was around 16 inches, though we lost a few that were closer to 18. All on X-Raps. Water temp was 77 by mid afternoon.

River Report -- June 24 Very productive half-day morning trip with a delightful father/son team from El Paso, TX and L.A. We boated around 25 smallies of all sizes, from little 10 inchers up to 18 inches. The highlight of the day was when the guests teamed up for a double with two of the best fish of the day, 16.5 and 18 inches. Everything on X-Raps. Water low and clear; water temp 78 degrees.

River Report -- June 20 Today was the final day of a three-day booking; two great guests that worked hard, and had a great sense of humor. Despite a good looking early morning -- plenty of fog to defuse the sunlight -- things started off slow. Toward mid morning the bite picked up a bit. Still we worked hard to boat around 20 smallies and a 20-inch walleye. A few nice sized bass, with the biggest being 17.5 inches. A couple came on flies, but most were on X-Raps. Water is getting very clear, and was up to 81 degrees when we finished up around 2:30.

River Report -- June 19 Another productive day. More fish landed on streamer flies; and a real nice collection of fish on X-Raps. Several smallies in the 15 to 17 inch class. Also three walleye, including a 20 and 24 incher. Water's clear and was 78 when we got off the water mid-afternoon.

River Report -- June 18 Today was the start of a multi-day trip for a group from the Dayton, Ohio area. Clients are skilled fly anglers. Things were slow on the fly rod today, though one of the party boated a dandy smallie on a streamer. X-Raps were productive, though, with a nice bunch of fish up to 16.5 inches taken.

River Report -- June 17 Smallmouth bass were active today, likely the result of the cloudy weather and threat of t-storms. Client and I boated 62 and lost another 15 or so. A lot of small ones, but enough hard fighting 12 to 16.5 inchers to keep things exciting. Most of them on X-Raps, but a few on Winco River Darter and Wacky Worms. Water temp 75 degrees, and fairly clear.

Kahle/River Report -- June 15 Very productive day today. Though the largemouth bite has slowed from the torrid level of last month, it's still producing plenty of fish. We boated 25 largemouth and four nice crappies during the morning. During the afternoon session on the river we boated 25 smallmouth bass up to 17 inches. Everything on X-Raps.

Fishing Report -- June 14 Spend the morning fising with crankbait expert Chad T. The objective was to get a few quality lmb for some quick pictures to support a crankbait article I'm working on. Chad came through, as we boated a couple dozen largemouths up to four pounds.

River Report -- June 13 My son Jay and I fished the river during the evening "witching hour," picking up a few quality smallies in the fading light. The year's biggest river smb to date -- 20.5 inch, four pound -- feel to a Winco Wacky Worm. The bait was fished on a Daiichi Catch and Release Wacky circle hook, a hook I'm becoming very impressed with used in concert with soft baits like Wacky Worms and River Darters.

River Report -- June 9 Pretty slow day today. We boated 20 to 25 smb, but most of them were small. Also got two walleyes. Decent action first couple of hours, then it slowed considerably once the blazing sun got on the water. Clear water, little wind, and bright sun/little cloud cover often spells for a slow day. Water temp 72 degrees. X-Raps and Winco Wacky Worm.

River Report -- June 8 Today's clients wanted to try for some walleyes. We got five (one lost a boatside) between 17 and 22 inches. Also got about 30 smallmouth. Mostly small ones today, but a few nice ones, including a 19.5 incher. Bonus fish: a freshwater drum that had to weigh in excess of 12 pounds; and a nice, thick, 36 inch muskie. X-Raps and Storm Wild-eye Shad.

River/Kahle Report, June 5 -- Aftermath of cold front must have given Kahle's lmb lockjaw. We worked hard to boat 15 during the am session. Nothing over two pounds. Happily the river smallies liked the cooler water. During the pm session we boated 58 in four hours, a lost a few. All sizes from little guys up to 17 inches. X-Raps and Winco's River Darter.

June 3 -- Pymatuning Report Walleye bite starting to slow. We worked hard to put a handful of legals and sublegals in the boat. Bigger walleyes on jig-n-crawlers. Also caught several big crappies on trolled crankbaits.

Kahle Report -- June 2 My good friend and bass fishing expert Deron Eck joined me today to get pictures for an upcoming article. We boated 30 bass, with several quality fish in the three pound range. Blustery, post-cold front day.

May 31 Pymatuning Report -- Fishing tougher on Pymy today. We boated five walleyes, but all just under the legal size. Got 'em in three feet of water in the weeds, in the mid-depth range, as well as out in 15 to 20 feet. Couldn't put anything consistent together. Cordell Grappler Shad was the best trolled bait for walleyes. We also caught several nice crappies and yellow perch. Water temp in the mid to upper 70s.

Kahle/River Report -- Another outstanding morning on Kahle. Client and I boated 50 lmb up to 3.5 pounds. Winco Wacky Worms, Predator Craw, and X-Raps. 13 smb up to 17 inches in the afternoon, all on X-Raps.

River/Kahle Report -- May 23 Split trip today. Kahle was excellent during the morning shift. Clients boated a minimum of 60 lmb up to 3.5 pounds. Most of the fish in quality sized bass in the 14 to 16 inch size. Winco's Wacky Worms fished along the deep weed edge. Smallmouth fishing in the afternoon was okay, indicating bass are coming out of the post-spawn blues. We boated 10 smb, all but three quality fish in the 15 to 17 inch range. Also caught two nice northern pike, and one walleye. Everything on X-Raps.

River/Kahle report -- May 20 A very productive morning on Kahle. We boated 55 largemouth up to 2.5 pounds. Winco's Wacky Worm fished along outside weed edges. Bite was tougher on the river during the pm session. Caught a dozen smallies, mostly smaller males. Four nice ones. Also two 19 inch walleyes. Everything on hard jerkbaits.

River Report -- May 19 Back on the river after a period of high/dirty water. We boated 22 smb up to 18 inches, and lost a few others. Based on the areas where we caught fish -- summertime areas -- I'd say this spring's spawn is wrapping up. Water temperature is in the mid 60s. Water level normal, and fairly clear. X-Raps and Winco's River Darter. Fish weren't interested in jigs or senko-style baits.

Shenango Crappies -- May 16 While Pymatuning Lake has deservedly received a lot of praise the past couple of years for its phenomenal crappie production, it's not the only place to go this spring for awesome action on slabs. I spent a productive morning on Shenango today, catching good numbers of nice-sized black crappies on 1/8-ounce Blakemore Road Runners dressed with 1.5 inch Crappie Grubs. This combination was ideal for scouring the shallow water zones where the crappies were holding.

Pymatuning Report -- May 13 Partner and I limited out on walleyes. Also caught 20 sublegal walleyes, and numerous crappies and yellow perch. Took everything trolling seven to nine foot depths on Shad Raps.
