River Report -- Sept. 17 A good day on the Allegheny. We boated/near boated over 40 smallies. At least eight of them in excess of 15 inches, including two 19 inchers. Also had two "doubles," i.e. two smallies on the same lure/same cast. One of the doubles was a made up of 15 and 17 inch fish. Both of the doubles on XRaps. Also caught quite a few fish on Winco's River Darter. Water temp 65-68 degrees, low and clear.

River Report -- Aug. 4 As as been the case much of the summer, river smallmouth fishing is holding up well. During a five-hour stint we boated 30 smallmouth and two walleyes. Winco River Darters produced early; then X-Raps took most of the fish. Water temperature 81 degrees. Water low and clear with a fair amount of floating weeds.

River Report -- July 13 We had to work hard for bites today, but we got some real nice fish. Only boated (or lost next to the boat) 10 to 12 smallies, but five of them were quality fish from 16 to 18 inches. We also boated four walleyes (all legal) up to 24 inches. Water still stained; water temp 82 degrees.

River Report -- July 12 River smallmouth were less active today. We boated (or near boated) between 12 and 14 during a four-hour half day trip. Though the numbers were down, several of the fish were in the 15 to 17 inch range. Water temp 82 and stained.

River Report -- July 11 My friend Mark Transue joined me for a couple evening hours on Pool 6. We boated around 10 smallies, including a few quality-sized fish. Senkos and X-Raps were the most productive baits. Transue's Tackle in West Kittanning carries a fine line of St. Croix rods and Shimano reels, along with many quality lures and baits. He's the only shop in the area that has a selection of Jimmy D's Riverbug jigs.

Conneaut Lake -- July 10 Spent several hours on Conneaut Lake today with my friend Dave L. Not a lot of bites, but some nice largemouths. Dave took top honors with a 4.5 pound largemouth. Our top five fish weighted just under 13 pounds. We also caught a couple nice northerns. Flippin' jigs took most of the fish. Others on Winco River Darter (fished on a drop shot rig) and Norman DD22. Conneaut's water is super clear; sub-surface weeds (coontail, milfoil and cabbage) in nice shape.

River Report -- July 6 The bite was tougher today. Things started off slow...only boated five or so the first three hours. Around mid-morning fish activity picked up. We ended up with 21 smallies up to 17 inches and one 20 inch walleye. Winco River Darters caught 'em in the real shallow water; X-Raps in the deeper runs and riffles. Hot, humid, cloudless day. Water getting pretty clear again. Water temp 82 degrees by mid afternoon.

River Report -- July 5 Today was day two of my Texas friend's river smallie trip. We boated 51 today. Today's catch again provided a wide range of sizes. Lots of little and medium-sized fish, though we managed at least a half-dozen in the 15 to 18 inch range. X-Raps and Winco River Darters. Water temp 80 degrees, with a slight stain.

River Report -- July 2 Wes W. of Texas (originally from Pgh area) continues his tradition of visiting western PA the week of July 4. As has been his past practice he fishes with me three days of that week. Today, on day 1, we caught 42 smallies. A typical summertime mix from dinks on up to 17 inches, with all sizes in between. Water had just a tad of color to it, and was 82 degrees when we left at 2:30 pm. All on hard jerkbaits.

River Report -- June 28 Hot, sunny day on the water. But fairly productive, given the weather conditions and the low, clear water. We hooked around 40, but lost more than normal today. The fish were biting on the tentative side, most only hooked on the back treble. Most days they t-bone jerkbaits from the side, getting pinned by the front hook. Biggest in the boat was around 16 inches, though we lost a few that were closer to 18. All on X-Raps. Water temp was 77 by mid afternoon.

River Report -- June 24 Very productive half-day morning trip with a delightful father/son team from El Paso, TX and L.A. We boated around 25 smallies of all sizes, from little 10 inchers up to 18 inches. The highlight of the day was when the guests teamed up for a double with two of the best fish of the day, 16.5 and 18 inches. Everything on X-Raps. Water low and clear; water temp 78 degrees.

River Report -- June 20 Today was the final day of a three-day booking; two great guests that worked hard, and had a great sense of humor. Despite a good looking early morning -- plenty of fog to defuse the sunlight -- things started off slow. Toward mid morning the bite picked up a bit. Still we worked hard to boat around 20 smallies and a 20-inch walleye. A few nice sized bass, with the biggest being 17.5 inches. A couple came on flies, but most were on X-Raps. Water is getting very clear, and was up to 81 degrees when we finished up around 2:30.

River Report -- June 19 Another productive day. More fish landed on streamer flies; and a real nice collection of fish on X-Raps. Several smallies in the 15 to 17 inch class. Also three walleye, including a 20 and 24 incher. Water's clear and was 78 when we got off the water mid-afternoon.
