River Report -- May 14 Tough day on the river. Blustery day with rain and strong winds. Smallies tight lipped. We managed to boat five nice smallmouth up to 17 inches. Lost twice that many. And missed several others. Winco's River Darters.

Fishing Report -- May 13 Today was a split trip on Kahle/Allegheny. The morning session on Kahle was okay. We landed/near landed around 20 largemouth bass, with several decent ones around 15 inches. The river was tough during the afternoon. A strong wind was blowing and the smallies were finky. My guests worked hard and we managed to four smallmouth up to 16 inches. Lost/missed several others as they were biting lightly. Winco River Darters and X-Rap.

River Report -- May 8 Post cold front conditions; the bass less active than yesterday. During a "scouting trip" a friend and I managed several nice bass in the 15 to 18 inch range. Winco River Darters and Rapala X-Rap.

River Report -- May 7 Go all-day trip on the Allegheny. We boated 25 to 30 smallies. A bunch of big bass, including three more 19 inchers. A few on tubes, but mostly on Winco's River Darters. Water continues to slowly fall and clear.

Fishing Report -- May 6 A good day. We did a split trip between Kahle and the Allegheny. 19 largemouth during the morning session on Kahle. During the afternoon we boated 13 nice smallies and lost several others. Also one walleye. Most of the bass in the 14 to 15 inch range, though we managed a couple 19 inchers. Most of the Kahle largemouths on Texas-rigged tube. And all of the river smallies. Water slowly dropping and clearing.

River Report -- May 4 First guide trip of the year on the Allegheny. Action a little slow, but we hooked up with a half-dozen nice smallies during a four-hour half-day morning trip. All nice fish in the 14 to 18 inch range. One in the 18 to 20 inch range lost near the boat. All on Winco River Darters and tubes. Water up a couple feet from recent rain and off color.

River Report -- May 1 The River Rocket -- from Rock Proof Boats -- has arrived, and been properly christened with an Allegheny River smallmouth bass! Spent yesterday doing some of the rigging, but saved enough time in the evening to drop the boat in the water and give it a spin. Spent most of the time getting accustomed to the boat's handling, and its loading and unloading characteristics, but took the time to quickly fish one small section, which produced this nice 16 incher within the first few minutes. First guide trip slated for Wed., with several more on the slate throughout early May. Hope the rainfall stays within reason!

Fishing Report -- April 24 The bass bite is picking up nicely on Keystone Lake. During a scouting trip today with a friend we boated around two dozen largemouth bass up to three pounds. The next four weeks should produce good fishing in shallow water for Keystone bass. It's an ideal setting for a half-day evening trip during a weekday.
Also, I expect to take delivery of my new River Rocket (river boat) later this week. My first Allegheny River guide trip is slated for next weekend. River Boat update -- April 8 I got the word today from Brent Kauffman at Rock Proof Boats that my new River Rocket will be ready for paint next week. Only other details will be mounting the new trolling motor and breaking in the Sport Jet inboard and it'll be ready for pick up. I'm anxious to get this custom-built boat out on the Allegheny -- to extend the added benefits it will provide to guide clients. If I have the boat in time, I'll make the last week in April available.

Keystone Report -- March 12 My friend Dave and I spend a few hours on Keystone Lake today. As has been the case during previous trips over the past few months, we didn't put up big numbers, but did get some nice smallies in the 19 inch range. All from deeper zones on blade baits. The numbers should come up as spring progresses and bass move into the shallows. When that happens I'll start running spring/early summer bass trips on Keystone.

Lower Allegheny River -- Feb 21 The warm weather the past couple of days opened up a lot of areas on the lower Allegheny. My buddy Dave Keith and I fished the Freeport area. Highlight of the trip was this sauger, just a tad shy of 18 inches. Looking forward to getting out a few more times before the season ends in mid March.

Fishing Report -- Following a couple relatively unproductive trips to the Lower Allegheny (for walleyes) and Spring Creek (for wild brown trout) I had a better outing. Fished Keystone Lake -- had to motor through a couple patches of skim ice -- and caught a smallie just shy of 20 inches and a nice largemouth in the 18 inch range. Both on blade baits. My partner lost a big fish -- likely a walleye -- also on a blade. Looks like winter returns for the next few days though.

End of the Season Wrap-Up -- My guiding season concluded the end of November. Post-Thanksgiving trips produced some nice smallies up to 18 inches and walleyes to 22 inches. Typically I remain available for guide trips during the winter months, but as I'm upgrading my river boat this year, I shut down early. PolarKraft it sold; next spring I'll be taking delivery of a new 18 foot custom-built River Rocket by Rockproof Boats out of the Harrisburg area. Wiegel Brother's Marine will maintain the boat's 200 hp Merc OptiMax Sport Jet, and remains my recommendation for factory-built outboard and inboard jet boats. River Report -- Nov 15 A relatively slow day. We boated eight smallmouth bass and four walleyes. Biggest bass in the 17 inch range. Biggest walleye 22 inches. All of the fish on hair jigs, either Jimmy D's River Bugs or rabbit fur jigs. Water temp dropped from 55 degrees to 45 degrees, and up a couple of feet. Lots of leaves washing into the river with the higher flows.

River Report -- Nov 8 We spent more time in walleye spots today, as that's what clients were most interested in. We managed four walleyes as well as 15 smallies. Biggest walleye in the 20 inch range. Biggest smallmouth around 16 inches. Jig-n-minnow and jig-worm combos. Action started off good, but quickly tapered off when the fog burned off mid morning. Water temp 52 degrees.

River Report -- Nov 6 A good day, action-wise. But many small fish, and a lot of lost fish. We probably hooked at least forty bass during the outing. Did manage a few good ones up to 17 inches. Winco's Baby Tastee Tube accounted for many bass, as did a Yum Dinger fished on a leadhead jig. Water temp up to 56 degrees, nice flow and color. The long-range forecast indicates lots of temps in the 40s and 50s to there could well be plenty of opportunity for river smallies remaining. Bigger fish should begin showing up in greater numbers as water cools.

River Report -- Nov 5 We had a relatively productive day today. Boated 24 smallies and one 22 inch walleye. Many of the bass on the smaller to medium size range, though we did boat a few in the 15 to 17 inch range. Winco Baby Teaser Tubes, Galida Grubz; jig-and-reaper combo, and rabbit fur jigs produced the fish. Water temp back up to 55 degrees by the time we got off the water late afternoon. Still a bit high; stained.

River Report -- Nov 3. The widespread heavy rain of mid week (last week) blew out the Allegheny for several days. It's back to (what I consider) a fishable level, though still a couple feet higher than typical for this time of year. With several upcoming guide trips approaching a friend and I did a 6 hour scouting trip. We managed 13 or 14 smallies and two legal walleyes. No monster bass, but most were in the 13 to 16.5 inch range. Tubes (including Winco's Baby Teaser Tubes), Galida's Grubz and Strike King Bitsy jigs (with Yum Craw Papi trailer) all produced fish. Water still dirty but clearing and 53 degrees. All of the fish in typical fall spots, i.e. deeper pockets protected from strong current.

iver Report -- Oct 25. Another outing where we worked for bites. Around 10 smallmouth boated/near boated during a half-day AM trip. Mostly medium-sized bass today, with a couple better ones up to 17 inches. Higher flows and colder water temps needed to push bass into "wintering" type areas. Water up about a half-foot from last night's rain, still in the mid 50 degree range, with a fair level of color. Winco River Darters and X-Raps.

River Report -- The bite a bit slower today than last trip (two days ago). Still, clients worked hard and were rewarded with some nice fish. We boated around 20 smallies, two walleyes and one small northern. Some smaller bass today. But plenty of quality-sized smallies, and a few big ones up to 19 inches. Winco River Darters and finesse jigs took most of the fish. Water quite clear and low; 54 degrees.

River Report -- Oct 22 One of the many pleasures of guiding is a chance to revisit clients from far away. Today was my friend Joe B's second and final day to share the boat with me this week, as part of his annual trip to this area from Arkansas. And it was a good outing. We boated 30 smallies and lost about 10 others. A few small fish, but most of them quality-sized bass. A lot of 13 to 17 inchers. And several 18 to 20 inch bass, including a 19 and 20 inch double pictured. Most of the fish, and all of the big ones, on Winco River Darters fished slowly. A few on Husky Jerks and hair jigs. Water just a bit of color and 52-54 degrees.

River Report -- Oct 20 Smallies more active than yesterday's trip. We boated 24 smallies and lost several others. No monsters, but a lot of fish in the 15 to 17 inch range. Winco River Darters, rabbit fur jigs, tubes, Husky Jerk. Water temp 49-51 and slightly stained.

River Report -- Oct 19 A slow day. Apparently the smallmouth didn't care for the 7 degree drop in water temperature to start off the day. We managed about a dozen smallies and one northern. A few good sized smallmouth, including a double with a couple in the 18 inch range. Also lost two big bass. More bass starting to show up in traditional fall spots. A few on Winco River Darters, including the two biggest. Also caught fish on bucktail jigs and Rapala Husky Jerk. Water level up a bit from last trip, some color, and 47-50 degrees.

River Report -- Oct 17 No mistaking that it's fall today. A blustery day that included several hail squalls and lots of strong, north wind. Still, a good day. We boated 22 smallmouth and a northern. Mostly medium-sized bass, but a few in the 17 to 19 inch range. All on Winco River Darters. Water clear, a bit lower than average, and 54 degrees.

River Report -- Oct 15 Not as many bigger bass as yesterday, but a good day all-around. We boated around 35 smallmouth up to 19 inches. All on Winco River Darters. River low, clear and 58 degrees.
