River Report -- week of July 1 During a week that originally had five bookings, we only managed to fish on Monday and Friday, due to the continuing rash of rain/storms that raise the Allegheny beyond fishable levels. Today's trip produced 15 to 20 smallies, most of them between 15 and 18 inches. Also one nice walleye. All of the fish on spinnerbaits. River is 3 to 3.5 feet above average summer levels, murky, and 70 degrees.

River Report -- June 23 Client and I boated 31 smallmouth today, and lost another 10. Bigger fish bit well during the morning. My guest got a couple 18 inchers; I caught my best of the season, a 20.5. Things slowed a bit in the afternoon as the temperature soared, and the river got busy with boat traffic and canoeists. Rapala X-Raps took most of the fish. Also caught them on Winco's River Darters, spinnerbaits, inline spinners and soft swimbaits. Water level dropping and slowly clearing. Around 70 degrees.

Fishing Report -- June 21 We did a split day fishing Kahle in the morning and the Allegheny during the second session. Kahle was relatively slow -- by Kahle standards. We boated around 10 largemouth in three hours. Nice, chunky 14 to 16 inch fish. Most of them on a Texas rigged Yum Doozee. During the second shift we boated around a dozen smallies. Several quality fish, the biggest 19 inches. Most of the smallmouth on Terminator spinnerbaits. Water level a foot higher than summer norm, stained (but quickly clearing) and 70 degrees.

River Report -- June 19 The river's been a yo-yo lately, mostly on the high ebb. Back on it today after the latest period of high water. Slow morning, but things picked up in the afternoon. We didn't have a lot of action, but the bites we did have were the right ones. Boated around 15 smallies. All but two were in the 14 to 19 inch range. Everything on spinnerbaits. Water level up about two feet from normal summer flow; heavily stained, and 67 degrees.

River Report -- June 11 Did a half-day afternoon/evening trip today. River color was still stained, but the fishing was pretty good. We boated 20 to 25 smallmouth, most of them quality-sized smallies. Several in the 17 to 20 inch range. Most productive lures were Yum Houdini Shad and Winco's Predator Craws. Spinnerbaits also accounted for several bass. Water temp 66 degrees and about two feet above normal summer level.

Fishing Report -- June 5 Two of my regular clients did a Kahle/river split trip today. We caught 20 some largemouths on Kahle in the morning. Several nice fish in the two to three pound range. Our pm session to the river was my first in a week, since the the water has been very high and muddy recently due to heavy rain up the valley. Water was still quite stained. We boated around 10 smallies, and lost a couple others. Several nice smallmouth in 15 to 17 inch range. Kahle was 70 degrees and clear. Largemouth on Wacky Worms, Texas-rigged worms, and Winco Predator Craws. Allegheny was 66 degrees. Smallies on Wacky Worms and X-Raps.

Kahle Report -- May 30 Kahle a little slower than is typical. Perhaps due to the hot and cold temperatures. Late last week we were dressed for winter weather; today is was cooking. We boated 20 to 25 lmb, with a few in the 15 to 17 inch range. Winco's Wacky Worm, River Darter and Predator Craw.

Kahle/River Report -- May 24 BIG change in the weather. Two days ago it was pushing 90. I doubt that it made 50 today, plus plenty of wind. Kahle Lake came through in the morning, though, as my client boated 28 largemouth bass on X-Raps and Wacky Worms. In the afternoon session, we boated 24 smallies, half of which were quality fish in the 14 to 18 inch range. X-Raps, Winco River Darters and Wacky Worms. Water temp 66 degrees and clear.

Keystone Lake Report -- May 23 I guided a great couple of guys today on Keystone Lake. They wanted the "muskie tour," a day spent targeting the lake's best spots for muskies. Despite great weather (leading edge of front/full moon) we didn't see a muskie. But they worked hard, and should have a good starting place to develop their muskie milk run.

Kahle Report -- A great morning on Kahle. We boated around 50 largemouth bass during a four-hour morning session. All of them on Winco's Wacky Worm and Winco's River Darter. Several fish in the 2 to 2.5 pound range.

Fishing Update -- May 20 During the past two weeks I've spent some time on Pymatuning for walleyes. Very slow fishing while I was there -- during the recent cold front that dropped snow. We did manage a couple quality walleyes in the 20 inch range. Also spent some time on Kahle, this time wading/fly fishing for article research. We did well. During today's guide trip on the river we boated around 30 during a half day AM trip. A lot of fish in the 15 to 18 inch range. Water temp 66 and clear.

River Report -- May 6 A slower day today. Only boated around a dozen smallies. Biggest around 17 inches. But an interesting day from the "species" side. We also boated one walleye, one northern pike. And we lost two more northerns, and a muksie in the 40 inch range. Water 62 degrees and clear. Most all fish today on hard jerkbaits -- Bomber Suspending Long A and X-Rap.

River Report -- May 2 The action and fish size a bit slower today. We boated a half-dozen smallies during a four-hour half day trip. They averaged 15 inches. Also a nice walleye and northern pike. We lost and missed a few bass as well. Water is clear, and rapidly warming. Up 56 degrees. Hard jerbaits and Winco's River Darter.

River Report -- April 30 A good day. The numbers down a bit, but lots of big fish. We boated 20 smalmouth bass, most of them from 2.5 pounds to near 4 pounds. Bass are starting to mil around spawning flats. The prespawn bite is on! Water temperature 52- 54 degrees. Water clear to slight stain. Most of the big ones today on Winco's River Darter.

River Report -- April 28 A windy, rainy half day on the Allegheny. My guests worked hard despite the tough conditions. The numbers were down, but we put a few quality-sized smallies in the boat. All on jerkbaits. Fish are starting to show up near spawning flats. Water temp 53-54.

River Report -- April 26 Another good day on the river. We boated 30 smallies and one walleye during a six-hour afternoon trip; lost another 10 or so. Jerkbaits, crankbaits, and Booyah Baby Boo jigs with crawfish trailers. Water temp 52 degrees. I expect smallmouth bass to be moving into spawning locations within the next week or two, depending on the weather.

River Report -- April 23 Finally back on the river after a period of high water. A good day. Things started slow, but we caught a few on tube jigs and Galida's Grubz. But afternoon -- after the sun had warmed the water -- we began catching them on jerkbaits over rocky flats. We ended up with another 15 to 20 big smallies on jerkbaits, including a double by the clients shown in photo. Water temp 48 to 50 degrees. Biggest bass was 19.5 inches.

River Report -- April 7 We finally have good conditions for river smallies. Today we boated/near-boated over 30 smallmouth bass. With the exception of a couple 13 inchers, all of the fish were in the 15 to 19 inch range. Taken on tube jigs and jerkbaits (Rapala Husky Jerks and Yo-Zuri Sashimi Jerkbaits). Water temp 46 degrees and clear.

River Report -- Dec. 16 We're still scratching out a few smallmouth. We boated eight smallmouth, all between 16 and 18 inches. Also three walleyes, two 18 inchers, and one sublegal. Water temperature 38 to 39 degrees. Most of the fish on tubes.

River Report -- Dec. 9 Recent rain had the river highly discolored, but elevated it to a normal level for this time of year. We didn't get many fish today -- two smallies and a three walleyes. But the outing did produce one of the year's best bass, a 20 inch smallie that went 4.3 pounds. Water temp 41 degrees. Everything on tubes.

Late Fall Fishing Update -- Dec. 1 November was a busy month, greatly dominated by grouse hunting. Still, we squeezed in quite a few guide trips on the Allegheny, along with a Pymatuning trip. The Allegheny has been productive, with quality-sized smallmouth bass showing up in fair numbers, along with some nice walleyes. On a guide trip for muskies on Nov. 29 the client had a 40-inch-class fish near the boat, only to see it shake the bait loose before it was in net range. On Dec. 1 we boated 14 smb and one walleye. No monster bass, but all were between 14 and 18 inches. Our Pymatuning trip only produced sub-legal walleyes and average-sized yellow perch (not the jumbos we found last fall/winter). River fishing should continue to be worthwhile as long as the river remains in good condition. I will book guide trips though (like last winter) will reduce the hours (and rate) of a day trip to six hours/$250. This will allow for fishing during the warmest part of the day.
