Fishing Report -- May 5 Overnight rain in Venengo County had the river running dirty and a bit higher this morning. River smallmouth action was slow. We boated a half-dozen smallies and a big freshwater drum during the first four hours, then decided to switch to Kahle Lake. The largemouths were more kind. Clients boated at least 30 bass. Most of them on the small side, but we did get a few quality-sized fish, including one in the four pound range. Winco Wacky Worms and Winco Predator Craws.

River Report -- April 22 Despite fishing during the remnants of a cold front that dropped the air temperature 35 degrees, my clients boated 28 smallmouth bass and lost another half dozen. The hot bait was a Wacky Worm from Winco Custom Lures. These baits come with the o-ring already installed, a feature that saves a lot of baits. Winco makes a full line of baits that excel in river smallmouth situations. Water temperature 58. Water still clear and low.

Fishing Report -- April 21 Spent five rainy/cool hours on a northwest PA lake fishing for smallmouth bass. My partner and I boated eight quality smallmouths up to five pounds. Guide trip-wise waters like this fall into the "select waters" category, and make good destinations for folks looking for added fishing opportunities.

River Report -- April 17 River smallmouth bass fishing is starting to improve. During a half-day pm trip we boated 10 smallmouths, and lost/missed several others. Only one small fish. The others 15 to 17 inches and very fat. Fish are starting show up in and around spawning areas. Most of the fish came on Dingers and Senkos. Water temp 58-60 degrees. Low and clear.

April 13 Pymatuning Report -- I headed north today to fish Presque Isle Bay for smallmouth bass. Though the day was beautiful, I had little success locating smallmouth bass. Three plus hours of fishing produced three fish hooked and lost. My partner and I decided to drop down to Pymatuning for the balance of the day. We boated several walleyes, along with a bunch of yellow perch and crappies, including some really nice ones up to 14 inches. Water temperature was 53 degrees.

River Report -- April 7 Smallmouth bass action on the Allegheny is still fairly slow. During a guide trip we boated a dozen smallmouth bass up to 17 inches, and lost a couple others. The river is very clear and low, particularly for this time of year. Water temperatures 51 to 53 degrees. Most of the fish coaxed up with XCalibur jerkbaits from slower, rocky runs three to six feet deep; a couple on Galida Grubz and Zoom Speed Craws. A few fish starting to show up around spawning habitat.

Pymatuning Update -- April 6 -- We found walleyes in 16 to 19 feet of water in basins south of the causeway. Caught a half dozen trolling Shad Raps on leadcore line. Also picked up several crappie and yellow perch at that depth.

River Report -- April 3 Another slow day on the Allegheny. We boated three smb, and two walleyes (one, a nice 24 incher). Seems the fish are still in a funk from the dramatic fall in water temperature (after the unseasonably hot weather in mid-to-late March). I'd expect things to return to a more normal pre-spawn bite soon. Water temps 48-50 degrees; water level normal and clear. Zoom Speed Craws and XCalbur 3-inch jerkbaits.

Pymatuning Lake Walleye Report -- April 1 The return to more typical early spring weather dropped water temperatures 12 degrees (48 today) from last Sunday. We trolled the five to six foot range that was so productive a week ago with no action; then moved out to 10 to 14 with the same results. Finally trolled some deeper basins and stump flats. Managed a short walleye, and marked a bunch of fish on the stump flats. We switched over to Northland Fireball jigs and Gulp Alive minnows, thinking perhaps the fish might respond to a slower presentation. That was the answer. We boated eight more walleyes, including five keepers in the 16 to 18 inch range. Bumped into a Fish Commission Conservation Officer as I was getting off the water. He reported that the walleye spawn was complete for the spring.

River Report -- A strong, cold north wind coupled with a five degree drop in water temperature made today's fishing a challenge. My clients -- who hail from Louisiana -- worked hard, and managed to boat a few fish, including one's first-ever smallmouth bass. River smallmouth will likely be tough for a couple days. Things should pick up again when the effects of this cold front pass.

Pymatuning Report -- March 25 Lots of walleyes in the shallows, and biting pretty well. We caught around 15 walleyes, with half of them being 16 to 18 inch keepers. Also caught several crappies, yellow perch, and smallmouth bass. Most of the crappies and perch quality-sized fish. All of the were taken by trolling shad-shaped crankbaits in five to six feet of water. Water temp: 58 degrees. Shallow bite should continue for a week or two.

River Report -- March 24 A lot of warm/hot days in between my last river trip and this one. Water temperature was 60 degrees. Wasn't sure what the bass would be up to, due to the super-fast warm up. We ended up catching 14 smallies, including the biggest of the year, a 19.5 incher. Also caught a fat, 25 inch channel cat on a jerkbait. Jerkbaits and Lake Fork swimbaits for the smallies. Though the unseasonably warm couple of weeks have really gotten the fishing going, I'm glad the weather is returning to more normal temperatures. It's tough on fish (and fishing) when such drastic temperature changes occur.

Keystone Lake Report -- Spend three hours checking out Keystone Lake this afternoon. Caught several largemouth bass up to 16 inches. Most were in the back ends of bays, right next to shore. Keystone's bass fishing should be consistent within a month or so.

Pymatuning Report -- March 17 Made my first "scouting" trip to Pymatuning. Spend a few hours trolling the deep basins with leadcore line, a tactic that has been effective on pre-spawn Pymatuning walleyes in the past. Not today, though. A good friend fished shallow and mid-depths with no success, so I checked out an area for yellow perch, one that produced well last December. The perch were still there. We caught a half-dozen nice perch, but the bite was sporadic. Bright, sunny skies, with very light wind. Walleyes should move shallow within the week.

River Report -- March 16 First guide trip of the year targeting river smallies. We boated 35 bass, four northern pike and a 23 inch walleye. Most of the bass in the 14 to 16 inch range, with a few 16 to 18 inches. Galida Grubz, rabbit fur jigs, and XCalibur jerkbaits accounted for the fish. With warm weather predicted for at least another week, this "super-early" bass bite should continue for at least a few days. Call or email if you'd like to strike while the iron's hot.

Winter Walleye Update -- Thanks to the mild weather I got in more winter walleye (and sauger) fishing than I have in several years. Fished the middle Allegheny, lower Allegheny and Ohio. Also, did some six-hour guide trips on the Allegheny. All-in-all, pretty good fishing, with some days providing high numbers of average sized fish, and some with fewer, but bigger fish. Leadhead jigs with Gulp minnows, and blade baits were the ticket.

2012 Fall Fishing, Pymatuning Perch -- Fall of 2012 provided some unexpected sport for yellow perch on Pymatuning Lake. I did several trips during Dec; caught loads of yellow perch, most of them in the nine to 11 inch range. Blade baits, jigging spoons along rocky humps in 18 to 22 fow.

River Report -- Nov. 13 A little slower on the river today. Lots of wind...limited areas that could be fished. We caught 32 smallies and three walleyes. Biggest walleye 22 inches. Biggest bass 17 inches. Floating leaves an issue in some areas. Galida's Grubz, Winco Chillee Willie, rabbit fur jigs. Water temp 45 degrees. Fairly clear. Water level dropping. --

River Report -- Nov. 10 Mark Transue (Transue's Tackle) and I fished river this afternoon, boating 27 smallies and one (sublegal) walleye. Biggest bass were 17 inches. Most of them on rabbit fur jigs. A few on Senkos and swimming jigs, too. Water temp back up to 49. Water starting to get quite clear (for fall). Floating leaves a problem in some areas.

River Report -- Nov 7 Today was a reminder of how good fall fishing on the Allegheny can be when conditions are right. Client and I boated 58 smallies and three walleyes. Lost a few bass as well. A bunch of fat bass in the 16 to 18 inch range. Most of the rest around 14 inches, with a dozen or so a bit smaller. Water temperature 45 to 47 degrees. All of the fish taken on Winco Undulators and rabbit fur leadhead jigs.

River Report -- Nov 6 Back on the river following a road trip to Michigan (ruffed grouse hunt), and a short hiatus to catch up on overdue writing assignments. We boated 40 smallies (including two 19 inchers) and four walleyes (biggest 21 inches). Only two bass under 12 inches. The majority were 13 to 16 inches and fat as footballs. All of the fish on Winco Undulators, Winco Chille Willies, and Galida Grubz.

River Report -- Oct 23 We did a half-day am trip today. Cold air temp (35 degrees) and very foggy start. Fish were lethargic first couple of hours. Boated a few, and missed/lost several. Action picked up as the fog burned off. We ended up boating 14 smallies up to 17 inches in four hours. Speed Craw, Jimmy D Riverbug (bucktail) and Winco Undulator were the productive baits. Water temp 52 degrees.
