River Report -- Nov 5 River smallies really like hair jigs when the water temperature is 50-55 degrees. Today's trip produced bass up to 18 inches. All on Jimmy D's Riverbugs and rabbit fur jigs. Water up, off-color, 52 degrees.

River Update -- Back on the river following a period of high water. River smallies are now in late fall locations. Caught a bunch in the 15 to 18 inch range, mostly on Jimmy D's Riverbug. River flow up, off-color, and 53 degrees. Floating leaves an issue in some places.

River Update -- October 26 Back on the river today, following a period of high, unfishable water. As I'd hoped, with the increased flow and drop in water temperature Allegheny River smallies were in their late fall locations, i.e. slower, protected areas. We got 'em on tubes, Galida's Grubz, and rabbit hair jigs. All between 14 and 17 inches. Providing winter doesn't make an early appearance, some of the year's best action for big smallies (along with walleyes and the occasional pike and musky) is likely to take place during the coming weeks.

Fishing Update -- Oct 16 River trips last week provided challenging conditions. The river has gotten very low and clear, with plenty of floating weeds in many areas. Throw in a full moon -- when it's likely bass are active at night -- and daytime fishing was, in general, slow. Still, all trips produced some nice smallies. Most of them 15 to 18 inches, and a few good walleyes as well. Water temperature is around 60.

River Update -- As has been the trend of late, the past week's trips yielded more big smallies. Plenty of fish in the 15 to 20-plus-inch range. Water temperatures are dropping -- currently around 60 -- so the bass will soon be moving to the slower, protected water when jigs and slow-moving suspending jerkbaits will be the ticket. For now, they're still in the faster areas, hitting Winco's River Darters and X-Raps. I'd expect the jig bite to be in full swing in two to three weeks.

Fishing Update -- All efforts during the past week on the middle Allegheny. Trips aren't producing great numbers, but a good many quality-sized bass in the mix. This is the time of year when bass start gravitating toward the slower, protected areas they'll use late fall. Early fall trips involve checking lots of areas, as good numbers of bass, especially the active, feeding ones, remain in the summer-like spots close to faster current. Look for updates in the weeks to come on other late fall options, such as Keystone Lake bass and Pymatuning walleyes.

Fishing Update -- Sept 24 Last week's trips including outings on both Keystone Lake and the middle Allegheny. Early in the week the Allegheny was running high and dirty from a deluge of rain that hit Venango and Crawford counties last Sunday, filling French Creek and Oil Creek, and ultimately the Allegheny. River trips Wed through Saturday witnessed a gradual fall in flows, as well as clearing. By the end of the week we were catching good numbers of smallies, and some big ones up to 20 inches; a few walleyes as well...hopefully a precursor of the fall season to come.

Fishing Update -- Action on the middle Allegheny remains solid. Lots of little bass, but quite a few good ones up to 19 inches as well. Walleyes showing up in the mix more frequently too. Water temp as of today was 70 degrees. With water temperatures dropping, and the days getting shorter, it's likely river action will be on the upswing.

River Update -- Sept 11 We got a few during a four-hour afternoon trip. Not bad for the backside of a cold front. The coming week should provide good conditions, with cooling water temps along with a slight rise in level from last night's rain.

River Update -- Back on the river, thanks to the speedy service at Weigel/s Marine (Franklin). Good fishing early and late in the day, with a slow mid-day period. No big ones brought to the net, though we did loose four good ones in the 16 to 18 inch range. Nearly all of today's fish on X-Raps. Water temp 80 degrees, slightly colored, with lots of floating/ weeds.

Fishing Update -- River Rocket jet boat up a Weigel's Marine in Franklin for some minor maintenance work on the jet pump. Should be back running river guide trips later this week. We've been targeting Keystone with decent success. Mostly largemouths, but a few nice smallies as well. Keystone is about 9 feet low. Boats can still be launched at ramp at Atwood access. But ramp won't be an option if the lake drops much more. Water temp around 80 degrees.

Fishing update -- Scouting/photo op trip on a lightly fished western PA river. Productive evening, with smallies up to 19 inches, along with a nice walleye. I might be adding this one to the "guide waters" list soon.

River Update -- August 20 Allegheny is back in nice shape following a period of murky water. Staring to see higher numbers of bigger bass as well as the occasional walleye. Still getting them on X-Raps and Winco River Darters. Fall is on the way. Cooling water temperatures make the bigger smallies more catchable. River temp 78 degrees.

River Update -- Aug 17 Trips last weekend were either shortened or postponed due to muddy water and a slew of weeds in the river. The river returned to nice shape mid week, but the strong chance of thunderstorms prevented running any trips. Guide outings resume this weekend, conditions permitting.

River Update -- August 12 Water was low and clear during last couple of trips. We're continuing to put decent numbers of fish in the boat. X-Raps have been the hottest bait, particularly when the fish need teased into biting. Winco River Darters getting fish when they are more aggressive. Also getting a few on Z-Man's ShadZ, fished via Ned Rig methods. Floating weeds starting to become an issue. Water's come up significantly during the past couple of days due to storms.

River Report -- Aug 4 Relatively productive full day on the river. Smallies active during the morning; slowed down late morning and afternoon. Several nice smallies in the 15 to 17 inch range in the mix. One walleye. Most of the fish on X-Raps. Water low, clear and 81 degrees.

River Report -- Aug 3 Smallies not especially active today, but we still managed to have a decent day by targeting high current areas. Bass up to 15 inches, along with a nice 20 inch walleye. Mostly on X-Raps...a few on River Darters. Water temp 80 degrees and clear.

River Report -- July 29 Lots of action during a full day trip out of Kennerdell that included waiting out an AM thunderstorm, though we had a hard time keeping them hooked. Smallies up to 16 inches -- Winco's River Darter and Rapala X-Raps. Water 80 degrees, low, and not quite as clear thanks to recent storm activity.

River Update -- July 29 I've ran several river trips since last report, mostly half-day trips in the pm. Good action, in general, though with the water being low and clear, the bass have been finicky at times. Water temperatures have gotten as high as the mid 80s. Bass action has been better under cloudy skies, and when the wind has roughed up the surface. Winco River Darters, X-Raps, Ned rigs and swimbaits have all accounted for fish.
