‚Äč RIVER TRIPS RUN IN A CUSTOM-BUILT RIVER ROCKET by ROCK PROOF BOATS

Bryan Braughler with a brace of nice smallies caught and released during late August

LATE SUMMER UPDATE -- Following a wet spring and early summer, the balance of the summer of 2017 has been a productive one.  Allegheny River trips have produced lots of smallmouth bass, with plenty of quality-sized bass in the 15-20 inch range.  Plenty of good-sized walleyes in the mix too.  As is the norm during the summer, Rapala X-Raps, Winco's River Darters, and Bass Pro Shops' Speed Shad have been the most productive offerings.  Summer patterns will likely continue through until water tempeartures drop into the low 60s (usually around mid October).  As water temperatures fall smallmouth bass will crowd into protected "wintering holes," offering up some of the best fishing of the year for big fish.  This continues until the water temp drops to around 40 degrees.  The late fall bite is great not only for smallies, but walleyes too, and typically runs from around mid October until late November.  This fall I'll also be offering trips on the lower Allegheny for walleyes.  Stay tuned to this page and my Facebook page for more details on lower Allegheny trips.

A key focus of the Keystone Connection is jet-boat fishing adventures on portions of the middle Allegheny River.  Skimming through shallow river sections, you’ll have access to miles of lightly-fished waters.  Smallmouth bass are available from April to December.  Typical whole-day trips on the middle Allegheny cover 12 to 15 miles of river.

NOTE: CATCH AND RELEASE FOR ALL BASS OUTINGS (and incidentally caught muskies).

If your interest leans toward learning bass-catching tactics on Western Pennsylvania’s hard-fished reservoirs, consider spending a day on Armstrong County’s Keystone Lake or Venango County’s Kahle Lake. Keystone’s clear water and deep weed growth provides a perfect venue for learning finesse presentations that take smallmouth and largemouth bass that see a lot of baits. Despite its small size, Kahle Lake harbors a fine largemouth fishery including five-pound plus fish. With extensive weed growth of several types, Kahle is a great place to practice a variety of tactics.
