River Report -- August 14 With no guide trip slated for today my buddy Dave Lehman and I took advantage of the cloudy/rainy weather for a river trip. Good decision. We boated 42 smallies and lost a few others. Two good ones in the three-plus-pound range. A few other nice ones over 15 inches. Only a handful of dinks. Around 18 on X-Raps. The others on T-rigged Zoom Speed Craws and also Bitsy Jigs dressed with Yum Craw Papi trailers. With the water temps down in the mid 70s, and some rain feeding things, the river should fish pretty well for at least the next week or so.

River Report -- Back on the river today. River still ultra clear, but much cooler than last trip. Water temp 75 in am; 77 when we got off the water mid afternoon. We boated 17 smallies up to 17 inches. Only a few dink-sized smallies. Several quality fish. Also boated two walleyes. One around 18 inches, and the other small. Lost at least 10 fish. The bite is improving. Some significant rain would really help stir things up. All of today's fish on X-Raps.

Keystone Report -- Aug. 10 My buddy Deron Eck and I fished Keystone this afternoon. Bright and sunny conditions. We caught about a dozen bass, mostly largemouths, and a couple smallies. Drop shot rigs, Texas rigged worms, and flutter spoons. Water temp 81 degrees. Lake about five feet below full pool.

Fishing Update -- With the action on the low-and-clear river being challenging, I've spend most of my on-the-water time fishing Kahle and Keystone. Keystone has been tough, but I've taken some nice bass, both largemouth and smallmouth. Kahle put out some quality largemouth, too, during a recent trip made by Deron Eck and me. Interestingly, I've had some good smallmouth fishing on my door step. Pool 6 produced some nice smallies when Mark Transue and I fished together on a drizzly evening. Many of the nearly 30 bass taken that evening fell to Yamamoto Senkos. Mark has a good variety of Senkos, as well as other lures that work well on local waters, at his shop -- Transue's Tackle -- in West Kittanning. The water is cooling off, and we've had a touch of rain. With guide trips coming up later this week I'll soon have updates on that action.

Fishing Report -- Aug. 2 The Allegheny is extremely low, warm and clear. Client and I boated 13 and lost 8 during the morning session. A couple 16 inchers in the mix. All on X-Raps. We decided to give Kahle a try in the afternoon. Boated seven largemouth up to 16 inches, all on Texas-rigged worms. Fishing will likely stay slow until the we get some rain and cooler weather.

River Report -- July 28. Pretty slow day under bright, sunny skies. Fish bit fairly well until the fog burned off, then it was tough. We ended up with 20 smallies up to 18 inches, one 19 inch walleye, and a 30 inch muskie. Everything on X-Raps. River very low, 82 degrees by late afternoon.

Fishing Report -- July 25 My client today wanted to gain some confidence in tactics that take bass on Keystone Lake, which can be a tough lake. We had a productive day, boating 22 largemouth and a nice 17 inch smallie. Several largemouth over 15 inches. Texas-rigged worms, wacky worms on drop shot, fluke and X-Raps all took fish.

River Report -- July 20 Escalating water temps, hot air and a scorching sun combined to make today a challenging one. We boated 22 smallies up to 17 inches. Most on an X-Raps, but a few on soft swimbaits (Live Magic Shad and Little Dipper). Water temperature up to 86 degrees by late afternoon. Water clear again.

Fishing Report -- July 19 Did a split day trip on the Allegheny and Kahle. We boated around 20 smallies during the am portion on the river. Biggest was 18 inches, along with a few other good ones in the 15 to 16.5 inch range. All on X-Raps. Water temp 82 degrees. A nice stain to the water due to thunderstorms that moved across the valley the prior day. We put around 14 largemouth bass in the boat during the pm session on Kahle. Two nice ones in the three to four-pound range. The others 12 to 15 inches. All on Texas-rigged Yum Dingers. Water temp 84 degrees with an algae bloom.

Fishing Report -- July 13 My buddy Dave L. and I fished Conneaut Lake today. We boated around 25 bass, mostly largemouths. Dave caught two in the three-pound plus range. We also lost two quality (17 to 19 inch) smallmouths next to the boat. A topwater bite early, then drop-shot rigs and jigs. As noted on my last river report, a mechanical problem chased me off the water early. Much thanks goes out to Wiegel Brothers Marine -- Franklin, Pa. -- as well as Evinrude, for getting the problem quickly resolved. Picked the river boat up today...back in service.

River Report -- July 8 Great cloudy/rainy conditions this morning. Unfortunately we only fished for a couple of hours due to a mechanical problem. Client boated over 10 bass during that time, most in the 14 to 16 inch class.

River Report -- July 5 Hot, sunny, cloudless day combined with low, ultra clear water added up to a fairly slow day. Client and I boated 15 smallmouth bass up to 18 inches and one 17 inch walleye. Dozens of follows right to the boat. Rapala X-Raps and Yum Houdini Shad accounted for all the action. Water temp 79 degrees.

Pymatuning Report -- July 2 A revisit to Pymatuning Lake to check out the summer walleye fishing. The action not as fast as a month ago, but not bad. Boated 15 walleyes -- all 14-inch-ish clones. Lost one about 20 inches at the boat. Also caught four big crappies and four nice yellow perch. Hot lure was CC Wally Diver.

River Report -- June 28 The bass were a little more finicky today, perhaps because of clearer water. We boated 41 smallies, two walleyes. Biggest bass was 19. Also an 18 and 17 incher. Water temperature 72 degrees.

River Report -- June 25 During a morning half-day trip we boated 23 and lost several, including one in the 18-inch class right at the boat We boated a couple 17 inchers, a bunch of 12 to 14 inchers, and a few small guys (photo is of a "double."). Mostly on X-Raps, a few on flukes. A little color to the river and up a foot or so since last trip. Water temperature 72-73 degrees.

Kahle update -- June 20 I did a quick, three-hour afternoon trip to Kahle to see what the largemouths are up to. Boated 15 ... three good ones in the 17 inch range. The rest 12 to 15 inches. Some on the outside edge of the weeds on Texas-rigged worms; a couple on the inside weed edge on flukes and swimbaits; and a few over the tops of the deeper weeds on flukes. Slight algae bloom-tint to the water. Some nuisance grass showing up, but mostly in the shallows. Deeper milfoil/coontail still fairly clean.

River Report -- June 15 Another decent half-day morning trip. Things started off with a bang. In a light rain my client and I boated about 15 during the first drift (during a 45 minute period). Then the skies opened up and it really started to put it down. The bite (and rain) slacked off the rest of the morning, as we boated another 10 or so. The biggest bass was around 17 inches (too rainy for pictures). X-Raps and Case Sinkin' Salty Shad.

River Report -- June 13 Allegheny River fishing continues to improve. I had the pleasure of guiding one of my most loyal clients today, a gentleman I've nicknamed "X-Man" 'cause of his proficiency with a Rapala X-Rap. Today was no exception, as we boated 45 smallies and a walleye on the X-Rap. Water temp 72 degrees, with a moderate north wind.

River Report -- June 12 Things gradually picking up on the Allegheny. My clients boated around 14 smallies (up to 16 inches) and one walleye during a four-hour half-day morning trip. Most of the fish were well off the bank in current. I'd say any attempt by the bass to spawn in the river has come and gone. Rapala X-Rap was the best bait today. River running a normal level and clear; 75 degrees.

Keystone Lake Report -- June 5 With the river smallies still in a finicky mood my clients and I fished Keystone Lake today, in hopes of landing a muskie or two. In the a.m. we targeted laydowns with jerkbaits, a tactic that had taken a couple tiger muskies for me recently. No tigers today, but several nice smallmouth intercepted the Case Plastics Sinkin' Salty Shad. During the second half of the day we trolled large cranbaits for muskies but blanked.
